Gabions are rectangular, interconnected, stone filled wire baskets formed from welded or woven mesh, used to form an aesthetic retaining wall.
The corrosion-resistant gabion baskets are placed on a competent formation, then connected to adjacent gabions using tie wire or clips. The gabions are then machine filled with stone and hand placed to reduce voids. The baskets are stacked on top of one another and are generally stepped back to construct a tiered or sloped wall. Tie backs can also be applied to resist lateral loads.
