Slope Stabilization in Wyoming

As both construction manager and general contractor, Keller performed several techniques to provide slope stabilization below a Sheridan, Wyoming junior high school.

In 2017, an 80-ft-tall slope near a junior high school began to fail. Without remediation, any further movement would block a creek at the toe of the slope and cause widespread local flooding. Keller, known worldwide for its innovative geotechnical solutions, devised a multi-technique solution to stabilize the slope and ensure stability. 

First, Keller constructed a 20-ft-high soil nail wall, installing a total of 460 soil nails up to 35 ft long. A drainboard was installed behind the entire wall to collect and divert groundwater. Lower down, the team opted for a 20-ft-tall, anchored soldier pile wall. Over 140 soldier piles were installed up to 60 ft deep, along with two rows of high-capacity anchors. Behind the wall, horizontal drains were constructed to intercept groundwater and funnel it into a dedicated drainage system. 

To further increase the safety of the slope at its base, Keller constructed a gabion retaining wall up to 8 ft high and 3 ft wide along the creek. Thirty-foot-long anchors were installed for the first row of baskets, with additional anchors every fourth row. Finally, shotcrete was applied, hand-carved, and stained to create a natural-looking finish. 

We are very pleased with the collaborative effort between everyone involved including our local subcontractors, suppliers, and Sheridan community. The use of several remediation techniques provided a cost-effective long-term solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
